Joe BurbankJoe is an experienced primary mathematics specialist with over 19 years in education and a deep understanding of teaching across EYFS, KS1 and KS2. Formerly Assistant Headteacher at Stockham Primary School, he played a pivotal role in the school’s Outstanding Ofsted rating in 2019 before moving into his current role as a full-time independent maths consultant.
As an NCETM School Development Lead and Assistant Maths Hub Lead, Joe holds MaST, NPQH and NCETM PD Lead qualifications. He works with the BBO, Mobius and Enigma Maths Hubs, providing Intensive and Enhanced Support to schools across the region. Alongside this, Joe works independently with schools and multi-academy trusts, supporting leaders to strengthen maths provision, develop subject leadership and refine mathematical pedagogy.
Joe believes mathematics is an exciting, interconnected subject that every child can access, enjoy and achieve in. He is passionate about empowering teachers to build confidence, deepen subject knowledge and develop high-quality classroom practice that enables all pupils to reason, make connections and solve problems within a rich, coherent curriculum.

This session highlights how purposeful talk can deepen pupils’ mathematical understanding and strengthen reasoning.
Drawing on Teaching for Mastery principles and oracy research, we’ll explore strategies to develop precise mathematical language, support structured discussion, and create a classroom culture where all pupils can articulate and justify their thinking. Practical examples will demonstrate how talk can be a powerful tool for reasoning at every stage.
