The Rwanda Project - Update 2007-2010

Update Christmas 2008

Rebuilding of the classrooms in Mubuga is now complete. New classrooms are now being built in Mara and Mpembe.

Forty-five sponsorships have already been paid for the academic year 2009-2010.

English is about to replace French as the language used in schools. This could be problematic as teachers at this moment in time would only speak in broken English. Any suggestions on how we could help would be welcomed.

We have now extended our links into Tanzania. An existing classroom in Tanzania has been renovated but planned new building work is being held up by land ownership issues.

The photographs below show children and teachers attending the opening of the new nursery unit in Tanzania and children at work in one of the nursery classes.

If schools are considering projects for Lent 2009, we would be grateful if they could consider our Rwanda project. Our Director, Paul Walmsley will be happy to talk at school assemblies.

The other nine classrooms have been similarly renovated, but await the addition of gutterings or a water tank at the end of classroom block.

The Birmingham Catholic Primary Partnership will sponsor forty plus children through their education during the next academic year at a cost of £4500.00.

The nursery unit in Kidjicki near Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, has been completed. Kidjicki is about one hours drive from the airport. The nursery unit has two classrooms and accommodates forty-six children.

Two proper classrooms have been constructed in brick in Mara. In addition toilets have been built. (Photos to follow).

Plans 2008/2010

SUBJECT TO MANAGEMENT BOARD APPROVAL

SPONSORSHIP PROPOSALS

The Birmingham Catholic Primary Partnership hope to sponsor forty plus children through their education during the next two academic year.

BUILDING PROPOSALS

It is hoped to build two additional classrooms at Kidjicki near Dar es Salaam, Tanzania, as the children from the nursery unit move up to first and second year primary. Building costs have doubled over the last year and the cost of the build is likely to be much higher than the cost of the nursery unit. It is hoped that the community will contribute either in matched funding or in fitting out costs.

The roof on the orphanage at Ruyenzi is made of asbestos. It is proposed that this should be replaced by a roof made of corrugated iron at a cost of £4000.00 approx.

The reservoirs completed in the Water Project now need some repair work.

The building of additional classrooms at Mara is proposed.

OTHER

The Management Board may also consider the following:

  • The purchase of sports equipment
  • The provision of desks and blackboards at Mara
  • Sponsoring a Sister through her university studies for a year

The Sponsoring of Forty Students through their Education

It costs only £120 per year to sponsor a child. This covers:

  • School Fees
  • Food
  • A bed
  • Uniform
  • Exercise books
  • Examination fees
  • Costs of food and lodgings

If you are interested in sponsoring a child please contact Paul Walmsley on 0121 476 3415.
